EASPD is organizing its annual conference on Employment in Zadar, Croatia on May 7-8, 2015. The conference “Inclusion through Jobs: making it a reality” will showcase best practices from across Europe on Employment and Disability. Thanks to the testimonies of employees and employers, participants will have the chance to understand what support persons with disabilities need to successfully integrate in the open labour market and to be able to access a job after finishing school.
More information on the conference will follow in January 2015!
Background
The right to work is a fundamental right recognised in several international legal instruments such as the International Labour Organization Convention nr 159 and the International Covenant of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). Articles 6, 7, and 8 of the ICESCR discuss the right to gain a living, the right to fair and favourable conditions, and the right to form trade unions for all human beings. The right to work is essential to the enjoyment of other important human rights and thus forms an inherent part of human dignity.
Article 27 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities cross-references the ICESCR, although not in such an exhaustive way as to replace it. Rather it stresses the importance of applying a disability lens to the human right to work and employment and emphasises the following points.
- - Priority should be given to the participation of person with disabilities in the open labour market and all efforts should be done, through reasonable accommodation, to achieve this;
- - Persons with disabilities should, in any case, enjoy the same labour rights as others.
Some of the EASPD's member organisations have great experience in supporting professional insertion for persons with disabilities in the open labour market and in facilitating access to vocational training and the transition from school to employment.
