Profile of Dr Armineh Soorenian
Armineh Soorenian completed her doctoral study at University of Leeds – Centre for Disability Studies in November 2011. Using qualitative methods, she investigated the experiences of disabled international students in such areas as information; access and funding; disability services; learning and teaching; accommodation and social life in British universities. Subsequently, using the social model of disability, a range of barriers in participants' university life, in particular those pertaining to education, access and physical environment was identified.
Recently her book ‘Disabled International Students in British Higher Education: Experiences and Expectations’ was published by Sense Publishing House. Soorenian has published articles in international journals such as Disability and Society, and Equality Diversity and Inclusion, and presented her work in various conferences. Soorenian completed an internship period in ‘Centre of Studies on Inclusive education’, where she contributed towards preparing training packs on disability issues for school teachers, reviewing documents and websites on inclusive education and applying for funding for new projects.
Soorenian is an independent researcher and her research interests include inclusive education, disability arts, disability representations, disability and gender, and disability hate crime. She has contributed to the disability section of the UK Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) Shadow report – Women’s Equality in the UK: A health check for the examination of the UK Government by the UN CEDAW Committee in July 2013. To date she continues researching, publishing and campaigning specifically on inclusive education issues.
