Mon, 15/10/2012 - Tue, 16/10/2012
On 15 and 16 October, the XI Ibero-American Civil Society Meeting was held in Madrid. The meeting provided various entities of civil society with a workspace and an opportunity for exchange, with the aim of enhancing sector participation, promoting mutual understanding and sharing different strategic action plans.
Under the slogan “A necessary change”, different key working areas were set up. Among them, education played an especially important role since it is considered to be the basis of social development. Education forms the axis of an individual’s future, enhancing his or her own capacities, and thus is at the centre of all policies.
Maria Antonia Casanova, as an expert in the field, presented the work of the European Network of Inclusive Education and Disability, incluD-ed. She emphasized the fundamental democratic character of inclusive education, and its important role in achieving social enrichment through diversity and equal opportunities for all.
After the presentation by Ms Casanova, there was a panel discussion on "Education as a key to development". Panelists Alejandro Tiana (Spain), Maria Victoria Angulo (Colombia) and Ilich Ortiz (Brazil) concluded that an investment primarily in education is essential if we want to achieve sustainable development that respects equal opportunity for all people. This theme, and the shared experiences throughout the event, highlighted the personal and social benefits that are achieved by providing quality education for the entire population.
