Résumé

Pathway to Independent Living is a 2 year course designed to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities within a post-secondary vocational college.  The two year programme caters for students with mild to moderate disabilities/ learning difficulties. It is intended to support students acquire skills for independent living particulary those required to gain and maintain employment.

Project object:

The project objective is to restructure the course programme to make it more accessible and applicable in the context of a vocational setting. The Pathway to Independent Living Programme provides an opportunity to applicants in possession of the school leaving certificate to follow a structured programme of study focusing on the individual students’ needs.

Méthodologie

Focus Groups Interviews Participant Observation. During the programme, students are given ample opportunities to experience hands-on learning in all subject areas.

Objectif

Students with learning disabilities who have finished compulsary education. Applicants pass through a selection process. This includes an individual and/or group interview. An Initial Assessment Test will also be carried out to assess the applicants’ academic level. Applicants are expected to have basic skills in literacy and numeracy, be able to tolerate both classroom and community learning environments and be willing to take up employment.
