Community Living for all - A conference on the Future Role of the European Union Structural funds

The conference “Community Living for all - A conference on the Future Role of the European Union Structural funds to Advance Community Living for Older People and People with Disabilities”, supported in part by the European Foundation Centre (EFC) Consortium of philanthropies on Human Rights and Disability (Brussels) and Fundación ONCE, Spain will take place 2rd May 2013 in Dublin. The conference is organized in Association with the Irish Presidency of Council of the EU and will focus on the positive potential of the EU Structural Funds in assisting Member States to achieve community living for older persons and persons with disabilities.
This one-day conference will examine the positive potential of the EU Structural Funds in assisting Member States to achieve independent and community living for older persons and persons with disabilities. It is timely given the ongoing process of drafting new Structural Fund Regulations for the funding period of 2014-2020. It will contribute to debate at EU level regarding EU compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as well as with the rights of older persons.
It will examine the policy continuities between older people and persons with disabilities especially as regards community living. It will reflect on international best practice and identify the added value of the EU Structural Funds. Key messages will emerge as to the future use of the Funds.
The conference is co-directed by Professor Gerard Quinn of NUI Galway and Senator Katherine Zappone of the Senate of Ireland. The speakers will be drawn from a variety of EU-level institutions, civil society, policy makers, philanthropy and regional and international organizations. European level civil society groups will be represented by the European Disability Forum and Age Platform Europe. The conference will be opened by the Irish Minister for Older People, People with Disabilities, Mental Health and Equality – Kathleen Lynch, T.D.
The conference is open to all interested in the development of positive EU social policy in the fields of ageing and disability.
