As every year, the European Commission is celebrating the Day of Persons with Disabilities together with the European Disability Forum.
This year's Day of Persons with Disabilities conference will take place on 7-8 December 2015.
The conference will focus on children and young people with disability. Presentations and discussions will be on the current situation of children with disabilities in Europe, on their access to education and how it contributes to the equal participation of children and young people with disabilities in society. Children with disabilities and parents of children with disabilities will be among the panelists, together with representative organizations or groups of persons with disabilities (DPOs), government representatives, academics and the Fundamental Rights Agency, which will present its report on violence against children with disabilities.
On 8 December, at a ceremony during the conference, the Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, Marianne Thyssen, will announce the winners of the 2016 Access City Award, the European wide award that rewards cities for their efforts in making them accessible to all.
The conference is part of the EU’s wider efforts to promote the mainstreaming of disability issues in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to which the EU is a party since January 2011 and the EU Disability Strategy 2010-2020.
Registration for the conference can be made only upon invitation.
