NERA’s 41th congress: “Disruptions and eruptions as opportunities for transforming education”
Thu, 07/03/2013 - Sat, 09/03/2013
NERA, the Nordic Educational Research Association and the School of Education at the University of Iceland, is organizing its Annual Nordic Conference on Educational Research. The 41th NERA Conference on the theme “Disruptions and eruptions as opportunities for transforming education” will be held on March 7-9, 2013, in Reykjavík, Iceland.
The NERA Organizing Committee writes about the choice of the congress theme “Disruptions and eruptions as opportunities for transforming education” the following:
The financial and economic crises since 2008 have shocked the world and led to cut-downs in many public sectors including education. The Nordic response was generally to protect education and other egalitarian and welfare aspects of society from the most dramatic measures taken, but in the wake of such defensive actions the long-term development of education has to be reconsidered. Disruptions offer us a challenge to explore the direction of educational reforms in the light of the global reshuffling that is taking place. Are the egalitarian principles of Nordic education losing ground in sharpened international competition?
Educational discourse in the Nordic countries has for a long time resonated with ideas of ethics, transformation and action competence, about developing the potential of individuals and society. Theoretical advances suggest that education can benefit from the dynamics of participation in communities but also that we can explore the contributions individuals make collaboratively and creatively to the transformation of practice, to identity and learning, to innovation, to learning to be, do and know, to working towards sustainability.
Participants in the 41st NERA Conference will provide insights as they analyse fundamental elements of education and diverse educational practices in the Nordic region. They will bring thoughtful perspectives and analyses of problems in education, not only about learning to know but which is also about becoming human through the pursuit of activism.
