XVII World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf in Istanbul
Tue, 28/07/2015 - Sat, 01/08/2015
Deaf people have full human rights in an equal world where they and their sign languages are recognised and included as part of human diversity.
The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), established in Rome, Italy in 1951, is one of the oldest global organisations of people with disabilities. The WFD is an international non-governmental organisation of 133 national associations of deaf people, representing 70 million deaf people in five continents worldwide. The WFD also has nine (9) Regional Secretariats/Co-operating Members.
The WFD has a consultative status within the United Nations (UN) system. In this role, the WFD works closely with the UN and its various agencies in promoting the human rights of deaf people in accordance with the principles and objectives of the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other general acts and recommendations of the UN and its specialised agencies, e.g., the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). WFD is a member of International Disability Alliance (IDA).
The WFD works towards the global achievement of human rights for all deaf people and develops its activities towards the goal of equalisation of opportunities and full participation in society by deaf individuals in every country.
The WFD will celebrate the XVII World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf in Istanbul from 28th July to the 1st of August 2015.
