Distance Learning for Apprentices

Resumen
This project has transferred pedagogical experience with mobile phone technologies to apprentices’ learning processes during the on-the-job training periods in their vocational educations.
Mobile phones have become the young generation's media no. 1, and the mobile broadband has accelerated development by creating virtual highways for mobile online communication.

Objetivo del proyecto:
From 2008 to 2010 the project has worked on developing, trial-running, implementing and disseminating these products:
- 'Reflection tool'
- - Freely available software, to be used for supporting apprentices in distance learning and training.
- Train-the-trainer module
- - A pedagogical concept for VET teachers and in-company trainers in the adaptation of mobile learning devices for training apprentices at a distance.
- 'Do's and Don'ts'
- - A catalogue with recommendations on distance learning and training of apprentices, when using mobile phones.
Metodología
Teachers and lecturers from VET institutions on several levels, trainers from VET-training companies as well as and students from 5 countries have been involved in the project: Denmark, Turkey, Germany, Portugal and Spain.
In trans-national personal and in virtual meetings the project members explored the technical and pedagogical possibilities of the new mobile technologies, based on experiences from first-mover-projects regarding new media.
In local trial runs, apprentices practiced the use of portable media, together with their trainers and other apprentices. The new technology and its facilities opened for new ways of communication, information search, assessing and connecting all parties involved, also during the apprentices’ job periods.
Besides using established facilities such as sms, sound messages, e-mail etc., they adapted the mobile broadband´s new possibilities for easy access to technical manuals or to data bases in the school and/or the company. Mobile guidance became a hotline between trainer and apprentice, between student and teacher and even between students. Finally, the project tried to meet the need for a personal reflection tool, specially developed and programmed to mobile interface.
Each country chose technical and pedagogical fields for development and trial runs, dependent on their specific needs and potentials. Quality panels
As a part of the project's quality strategy, each country partner had established a quality panel as "critical friends" for the project. The positions and the number of the stakeholders varied from country to country, but their members' positions as crucial stakeholders was in common for the different panels. The local project leaders invited regularly for meetings with their stakeholders. Interim results were presented, and the stakeholders' advice was factored into the country's activities. Another task of the quality panel was to withdraw their network for disseminating interim and final results of the project. |
Público objetivo
Teachers, trainers and apprentices
The project targets mainly vocational teachers and in-company trainers, by training them in using mobile media for educational distance training. But also colleges’ education planners and companies’ training managers will benefit from methods for including the new technologies in their education plans.

Socios y otros actores que participan en el proyecto
The core partners of the project were vocational education institutions from four countries: Denmark, Spain, Turkey and Germany, supplemented with an active "silent" partner from Portugal.
Each vocational partner institution involved at least two companies for implementation of the results in trial runs. All educational partners had strong networks with their local craft and industry. All in all, the country partners covered a range of branches with companies from both industry, gastronomy, agriculture and information technologies. Thus, the learning module’s degree of usability was tested in different sectors on its transferability.
The European School Head Association ESHA contributed with a European perspective during the project phases.
The Danish Metropolitan University College contributed with pedagogical and project-consultancy expertise. The quality of the eLearning products was monitored and improved by an external evaluator.
